Spike, "Well, not all of us are now immortal and can hide our wings. Rarity felt that old age was about to get the better of her, and she didn't want to go out looking like an old nag, so she sent me a letter, and found a cockatrice." He pointed at the statue. "I'm thinking of reviving her when I'm dying of old age. What do you think of the pose she picked? I think she likes it when I polish her."
Eh, question. Given that the realm of fiction has LOADS of variations in terms of what is considered a dragon (See TV Tropes for elaboration: [link] ), how could one possibly be able to have an accurate defintion of what is "a representation of a dragon" or what would count as a "pathetic excuse" of one?
It just bugs me to see people say things like that and then use them in their judgement of characters like Spike. There is no proper definition of what constitutes one as far as I'm concerned, for there's just too many stories out there to hammer out anything concrete.
Well, when I mean or say dragon, I'm talking the real deal, like in Skyrim, Dragonheart, Dragon Wars, Reign of Fire, and so forth: True Dragons, the ones that terrorized and destroyed the Dark Ages. Not those cliched fat, cartoony dragons that Disney and cartoons like MLP:FIM have a habit of making (why are almost all cartoon dragons and dinosaurs alike like that?) I'll admit, as far as cartoon dragons go, MLP:FIM did a pretty decent job, but it's no Reign of Fire. Some 'cartoon' dragons, like Spyro, are good enough to get by, but Spike is not one of those dragons.
As for Spike: Normally I'd jump right in and say he's a insenstive, selfish, self-righteous, glory-hogged brat, but I cut him some slack with the defense that he's, as poorly as he is, a dragon. Aren't dragons suppose to be, but in a more noble and darker sense? (he's just a kid, and raised by ponies, so I doubt his dragon persona will become cool and likable anytime soon). And he's has his better moments, so while I don't like for his attitude most of the time, I'm not one to just damn him to hell just because of my personal opinion of him.
